Handcart Ensemble

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet Paul Muldoon on Handcart’s The Burial at Thebes

“I simply can’t imagine a better production of The Burial at Thebes. Handcart Ensemble is a spectacularly gifted group, absolutely equal to the subtleties of Heaney’s text. I’ll go anywhere to see anything they do.” —Paul Muldoon

Fitting Homer in a Blackbox

Nicholas Alexiy Moran (top) and Matthew Herrick (bottom).

How to create an onstage ship's mast that can be assembled and taken down in under a minute? Having company member Nick Moran stand on somebody's shoulders (in this case, Matthew Herrick) was the solution that stuck after we started workshopping Homer's Odyssey back in Fall 2008. We've acquired some bells and whistles since then, but this photo captures our approach: An effort to communicate the most using the simplest means - though not always the easiest, as Matthew in the photo will attest. We open September 3rd.
